Campaign for Self-Identity and Self-Determination
WASHINGTON, DC (KP) - The Sikh Nation has always considered itself distinct from other faiths and the sacred Sikh scriptures attest to this distinct identity that was forged more than 500 hundred years ago.
The sacred verses in Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji openly declare:
I do not perform Hindu worship services, nor do I offer the Muslim prayers.
I have taken the One Formless Lord into my heart; I humbly worship Him there. ||3||
ਨਾ ਹਮ ਹਿੰਦੂ ਨ ਮੁਸਲਮਾਨ ॥ ਅਲਹ ਰਾਮ ਕੇ ਪਿੰਡੁ ਪਰਾਨ ॥੪॥
I am neither a Hindu, nor am I a Muslim.
My body and breath of life belong to the Great Almighty (Allah-Raam). ||4||
Guru Gobind Singh Ji declared in the verses of Uggardanti:
ਦੁਹੂੰ ਪੰਥ ਮੈਂ ਕਪਟ ਵਿੱਦਯਾ ਚਲਾਨੀ ॥ ਬਹੁੜ ਤੀਸਰਾ ਪੰਥ ਕੀਜੈ ਪਰਧਾਨੀ ॥
Tho two paths (Vedic and Abrahamic) have become corrupt.
O' Lord propagate and uplift the third path (Khalsa Panth) .
Ironically, Article 25 of the Indian Constitution considers Sikhs as being part of the Hindu dharma, and not separate or distinct. Despite continuing protests and agitations from the Sikh community, the Indian Government has declined to amend this offensive mis-categorization of the Sikhs.
Now, US based Sikh organizations, and activists, including the human rights NGO Sikhs for Justice, have launched as online petition campaign on the United States Government's Official White House Website requesting that the American President Barrack Obama, question India's PM Narendra Modi about why the Indian Constitution continues to classify the Sikh Nations as 'Hindus.'
The petition notes:
Sikhism, with over 30 million followers, is the world's 5th largest religion.
On January 26, 1950 Constitution of India was enforced without the consent of Sikhs who refused to sign it because Explanation II to Article 25(b) of the Constitution labels “Sikhs” as “Hindus”.
January 26, 2015 marks the 65th year of Sikhs' struggle for right to self-determination, for which Sikhs have been subjected to “Genocide" with impunity, starting from:
- June 1984, Military action against Golden Temple;
- November 1984, Organized killing of over 30,000 Sikhs; and
- 1984-98, Extra-judicial killing of over 100,000 Sikhs.
President Obama: Question PM Modi "WHY Indian constitution labels "Sikhs" as Hindus?" and raise the issues of “Sikh Genocide”; and “Sikhs’ Right to Self-determination”.
The goal of the campaign is to reach 100,000 signatures by December 31st, 2014.
Sikhs has a different Identity in every respect
we are totally different from Hinduism.
