The Sikh activist, Jhota, was known for confronting drug sellers and had emerged as a grassroots voice against Punjab’s drug crisis.

Mansa, Punjab (KP) — Parvinder Singh Jhota, a grassroots anti-drug activist known for challenging the alleged illegal sale of intoxicating substances in Punjab’s Mansa region, was shot dead at a chemist shop on Tuesday, October 13. Four of his companions were also reported injured in the shooting, which occurred during a confrontation with the shop owner and was partially captured on a Facebook livestream.

Jhota’s killing has renewed concerns about the scale of Punjab’s drug problem, the risks faced by people who challenge suspected drug networks, and the responsibilities of government agencies tasked with controlling the illegal sale of intoxicating substances.

Beyond his anti-drug activism, Jhota was also known among supporters as a pro-Panthic activist who maintained his Sikh saroop. His public identity reflected a commitment to Sikh appearance and an outspoken approach to issues affecting Punjab and the Sikh community.

From Kabaddi to the Anti-Drug Movement

Originally from Mansa, Parvinder Singh, popularly known as Jhota, had been associated with freestyle kabaddi before becoming increasingly involved in grassroots efforts against drug abuse and the alleged illegal sale of addictive substances.

He formed an “Anti-Drug Task Force” and became known for confronting people he suspected of selling drugs. He also launched the Nasha Roko, Rozgar Do (“Stop Drugs, Provide Employment”) campaign, taking his message into villages and encouraging local residents to organize against the drug problem.

According to published reports, his activities helped bring attention to alleged drug sales at certain medical stores and contributed to the emergence of village-level anti-drug committees in parts of the Mansa and Bathinda regions. His videos and interventions circulated widely on social media, making him a recognizable figure in the local anti-drug movement.

Fatal Confrontation Captured on Facebook Live

According to reports by NDTV and The Free Press Journal, Jhota was questioning a drug store (chemist shop) owner Ashwani Kumar over the alleged sale of drugs when an argument escalated and shots were fired.

The livestream reportedly showed Jhota questioning the shopkeeper about the allegations and asking for CCTV footage. The shopkeeper was seen holding a pistol before the confrontation turned fatal. Jhota was taken to Mansa Civil Hospital, where he was declared dead. A hospital official cited in media reports said he had sustained three bullet injuries, including one that pierced his liver. Four other people were reported to have sustained bullet injuries.

Media reports identified Ashwani Kumar as the alleged shooter and reported that he had fled. The precise circumstances surrounding the confrontation, the allegations about drug sales, and the subsequent legal proceedings remain matters for police investigation.

Earlier Controversy Over Alleged Drug Sales

Jhota had previously attracted attention following a confrontation with a medical store owner in July 2023. Reports stated that Jhota and his supporters accused the shopkeeper of selling prohibited or addictive substances. The confrontation led to police cases involving both the shopkeeper and Jhota or his associates.

His contentious methods sometimes brought him into conflict with law-enforcement authorities. Nevertheless, his activism drew attention to a serious public concern: how suspected illegal drug sales are investigated and stopped, and whether official enforcement is sufficient to protect communities affected by substance abuse.

Questions Over Punjab’s Response to the Drug Crisis

Jhota’s killing has prompted renewed criticism of the Punjab government’s handling of the drug problem. Opposition politicians have questioned the effectiveness of the government’s anti-drug campaign and asked why responsibility for preventing the illegal sale of intoxicating medicines has not been more effectively enforced.

The case also raises broader questions about the role of drug inspectors, police, and other regulatory authorities in investigating complaints against medical stores. Such allegations must be investigated through lawful procedures, with evidence established and responsibility determined through due process.

In 2023, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann had vowed to make Punjab drug-free, yet the drug crisis continues to haunt Punjab, fueling public suspicion that politicians, sections of the police, and drug dealers may be working in collusion—a perception that demands transparent investigation.

Bhai Amritpal Singh (Waris Punjab), whom Parvinder Singh Jhota sympathized with, was also engaged in anti-drug parchar, urging Punjab’s youth to reject drugs and embrace the Sikh way of life. Amritpal Singh was arrested in April 2023 and has been detained at Dibrugarh Jail in Assam under the National Security Act (NSA).

Surrey, British Columbia (KP) — The morcha outside Gurdwara Sri Guru Singh Sabha Surrey has ended following a written agreement between representatives of the British Columbia Gurdwara Council and the gurdwara management addressing three principal demands concerning the satkar, care, and verification of the 225 saroops of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji that were brought to Canada by cargo vessel in a manner contrary to Panthic maryada.

The decision to end the morcha was announced on October 2nd following a meeting of a seven-member committee, which approved the written agreement reached the previous evening between BC Council representatives and the gurdwara management.

The development comes after months of controversy surrounding the transportation and handling of the 225 saroops, including their shipment to Canada by commercial cargo vessel and a September incident in which video footage showed saroops being transported in the rear of a work van under conditions that prompted protests by members of the local sangat.

Dispute Over 225 Saroops Transported via Commercial Cargo Ship

The controversy began after 225 saroops of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji were brought to Canada earlier this year on behalf of Gurdwara Sri Guru Singh Sabha Surrey. More than 100 of these saroops are printed in larrivar format and were reportedly transported following a request from certain members of the Akhand Kirtani Jatha (AKJ), who allegedly collaborated with the Singh Sabha Surrey management in arranging their shipment.

In July, members of the Lower Mainland Sikh sangat and several gurdwaras held a press conference calling for an end to the transportation of saroops by commercial cargo ships and containers. The concerns included the manner in which the saroops were transported from India to Canada and questions regarding their subsequent distribution and care.

The July statement called for detailed records of the institutions and individuals receiving saroops, including their addresses and their ability to maintain the required maryada. It also called for an impartial and transparent investigation into the circumstances surrounding the shipment and for accountability where appropriate.

The issue escalated in September after video footage emerged showing an attempt to transport saroops in the rear of a work van. Earlier reporting noted that the vehicle contained shoes, food and drink items, rubbish, and other materials, while the saroops were placed on a low mattress without what the protesting organizations described as proper bedding, a palki, or chandoa.

The incident led to a large gathering outside Gurdwara Sri Guru Singh Sabha Surrey on September 21. Three provincial Sikh organizations subsequently appealed to Sri Akal Takht Sahib for intervention and called for complete information regarding the whereabouts and care of all 225 saroops.

October 1st Meeting Leads to Written Agreement

According to the October 2nd press note issued by the morcha sangat, representatives of the BC Council and Gurdwara Sri Guru Singh Sabha met at the gurdwara on October 1st to discuss the ongoing dispute and the demands concerning the satkar and care of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji.

The meeting resulted in agreement on three principal measures. The gurdwara management subsequently provided the agreement, including a related condition, in writing on its official letterhead to the BC Council.

The written agreement was then considered by a seven-member committee at a meeting held on October 2nd at Guru Nanak Sikh Gurdwara Sahib Surrey-Delta. The committee approved the agreement and the conditions attached to it.

Three Measures to by Singh Sabha Gurdwara Management

1. Akhand Path Sahib and an apology

As an expression of repentance for the lapses arising from the matter, Sri Akhand Path Sahib will begin on Monday, October 5th.

According to the agreement, following the bhog at 9 a.m. on Wednesday, October 7th, the management will offer an apology regarding the matter.

2. List of the 225 Saroops

The gurdwara management has agreed to provide the BC Council with a list of the saroops that were previously given to various homes or other locations.

The purpose of providing the list is to allow the current care and observance of maryada concerning those saroops to be verified.

3. Care and verification of the Saroops

The care and verification of the saroops currently located at Gurdwara Sri Guru Singh Sabha will take place under the oversight of representatives of the BC Council.

The BC Council representatives will also be permitted to visit the addresses where saroops were previously distributed. According to the press note, a representative of Gurdwara Sri Guru Singh Sabha will accompany them during these visits.

The stated purpose of the verification process is to ensure that the saroops are being maintained with proper satkar and in accordance with maryada.

The BC Council will also provide six Singhs to assist with the process of restoring and maintaining the required satkar.

Next Phase Will Focus on Verification

The conclusion of the morcha does not mark the end of the process concerning the 225 saroops. Rather, the agreement establishes a process for determining where the saroops are located and assessing their current care and observance of maryada.

A central component of the agreement is therefore the list of saroops previously distributed to private homes and other locations, followed by visits and verification by BC Council representatives.

The process is also intended to address one of the principal concerns raised during the September protests: the lack of publicly available information regarding the whereabouts and care of the 225 saroops.

The original July demands had similarly called for detailed records concerning the recipients of saroops and for transparent procedures governing their transportation, distribution, and care.

Matter to Be Reported to Sri Akal Takht Sahib

The morcha organizers stated that the complete record of the negotiations, the written agreement, and the seven-member committee’s proceedings will be submitted to Sri Akal Takht Sahib.

The organizers also thanked the sangat for its participation and cooperation throughout the protest and recognized Bapu Ranjit Singh Ji, Bhai Saroop Singh Ji, and other Singhs who had provided seva from the first day of the morcha.

With the protest now concluded, attention will turn to the implementation of the written agreement, including the commencement of the Akhand Path Sahib, the public apology, the release of information concerning the 225 saroops, and the verification of their care and maryada at the various locations where they were distributed.

Criticism of World Sikh Organization of Canada (WSO) Statement

The resolution of the Surrey morcha also comes amid criticism of the broader Sikh institutional response to the controversy. A recent statement by the World Sikh Organization of Canada (WSO), titled “WSO Calls for Constructive Dialogue on Satkaar and Maryada,” called for constructive dialogue and raised concerns about misinformation and division within the community. However, the statement drew significant criticism on social media, with critics arguing that it failed to directly condemn the alleged beadbi incidents involving the shipment and subsequent transportation of the saroops. Some questioned why misinformation and community division were emphasized when the immediate issue before the community was the handling and transportation of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji.

Silence of Sri Akal Takht Acting Jathedar SGPC Leadership Questioned

There has also been growing criticism of the lack of a concrete response from Sri Akal Takht Sahib and the SGPC throughout the controversy. Despite repeated appeals for intervention and clarification, including a formal September 22 appeal from the British Columbia Gurdwara Council, Ontario Gurdwara Committee, and Quebec Sikh Council, no decisive public intervention from Sri Akal Takht Sahib was seen during the dispute. Critics have also pointed to the SGPC’s silence, particularly given its reported involvement in the original shipment of the 225 saroops to Canada.

The morcha was sustained by the local sangat in Surrey, who maintained pressure through the protest outside Gurdwara Sri Guru Singh Sabha. The written agreement reached during the dispute now places the focus on whether the commitments made by the gurdwara management will be fully implemented and whether the verification process will provide the transparency and accountability sought by the sangat.

ਸਤੰਬਰ ਵਿੱਚ ਮਾਮਲਾ ਉਸ ਸਮੇਂ ਹੋਰ ਗੰਭੀਰ ਹੋ ਗਿਆ ਜਦੋਂ ਇੱਕ ਵੀਡੀਓ ਸਾਹਮਣੇ ਆਈ, ਜਿਸ ਵਿੱਚ ਪਾਵਨ ਸਰੂਪਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਇੱਕ ਵਰਕ ਵੈਨ ਦੇ ਪਿਛਲੇ ਹਿੱਸੇ ਵਿੱਚ ਲਿਜਾਣ ਦੀ ਕੋਸ਼ਿਸ਼ ਦਿਖਾਈ ਦਿੱਤੀ। ਪਹਿਲਾਂ ਕੀਤੀ ਗਈ ਰਿਪੋਰਟਿੰਗ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ, ਵਾਹਨ ਵਿੱਚ ਜੁੱਤੀਆਂ, ਖਾਣ-ਪੀਣ ਦੀਆਂ ਵਸਤਾਂ, ਕੂੜਾ ਅਤੇ ਹੋਰ ਸਮਾਨ ਮੌਜੂਦ ਸੀ, ਜਦਕਿ ਪਾਵਨ ਸਰੂਪ ਇੱਕ ਨੀਵੇਂ ਗੱਦੇ ਉੱਪਰ ਰੱਖੇ ਗਏ ਸਨ। ਵਿਰੋਧ ਕਰ ਰਹੀਆਂ ਸੰਸਥਾਵਾਂ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ, ਵੈਨ ਵਿੱਚ ਲੋੜੀਂਦੇ ਬਿਸਤਰੇ, ਪਾਲਕੀ ਜਾਂ ਚੰਦੋਆ ਦਾ ਪ੍ਰਬੰਧ ਨਹੀਂ ਸੀ।

ਇਸ ਘਟਨਾ ਤੋਂ ਬਾਅਦ 21 ਸਤੰਬਰ ਨੂੰ ਗੁਰਦੁਆਰਾ ਸ੍ਰੀ ਗੁਰੂ ਸਿੰਘ ਸਭਾ ਸਰੀ ਦੇ ਬਾਹਰ ਵੱਡੀ ਗਿਣਤੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਸੰਗਤ ਇਕੱਠੀ ਹੋਈ। ਇਸ ਤੋਂ ਬਾਅਦ ਤਿੰਨ ਸੂਬਾਈ ਸਿੱਖ ਸੰਸਥਾਵਾਂ ਵੱਲੋਂ ਸ੍ਰੀ ਅਕਾਲ ਤਖ਼ਤ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਨੂੰ ਦਖ਼ਲ ਦੇਣ ਦੀ ਅਪੀਲ ਕੀਤੀ ਗਈ ਅਤੇ ਸਾਰੇ 225 ਪਾਵਨ ਸਰੂਪਾਂ ਦੀ ਸਥਿਤੀ ਅਤੇ ਸੇਵਾ-ਸੰਭਾਲ ਬਾਰੇ ਪੂਰੀ ਜਾਣਕਾਰੀ ਦੇਣ ਦੀ ਮੰਗ ਕੀਤੀ ਗਈ।

1 ਅਕਤੂਬਰ ਦੀ ਮੀਟਿੰਗ ਤੋਂ ਬਾਅਦ ਲਿਖਤੀ ਸਮਝੌਤਾ

ਮੋਰਚਾ ਸੰਗਤ ਵੱਲੋਂ 2 ਅਕਤੂਬਰ ਨੂੰ ਜਾਰੀ ਕੀਤੇ ਪ੍ਰੈਸ ਨੋਟ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ, ਬੀ.ਸੀ. ਕੌਂਸਲ ਦੇ ਨੁਮਾਇੰਦਿਆਂ ਅਤੇ ਗੁਰਦੁਆਰਾ ਸ੍ਰੀ ਗੁਰੂ ਸਿੰਘ ਸਭਾ ਦੇ ਪ੍ਰਬੰਧਕਾਂ ਦੀ 1 ਅਕਤੂਬਰ ਨੂੰ ਗੁਰਦੁਆਰਾ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਵਿਖੇ ਮੀਟਿੰਗ ਹੋਈ। ਮੀਟਿੰਗ ਵਿੱਚ ਚੱਲ ਰਹੇ ਵਿਵਾਦ ਅਤੇ ਸ੍ਰੀ ਗੁਰੂ ਗ੍ਰੰਥ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਜੀ ਦੇ ਸਤਿਕਾਰ ਅਤੇ ਸੇਵਾ-ਸੰਭਾਲ ਸਬੰਧੀ ਮੰਗਾਂ ਬਾਰੇ ਗੱਲਬਾਤ ਕੀਤੀ ਗਈ।

ਮੀਟਿੰਗ ਦੌਰਾਨ ਤਿੰਨ ਮੁੱਖ ਮੰਗਾਂ ਸਬੰਧੀ ਸਹਿਮਤੀ ਬਣੀ। ਇਸ ਤੋਂ ਬਾਅਦ ਗੁਰਦੁਆਰਾ ਪ੍ਰਬੰਧਕਾਂ ਵੱਲੋਂ ਸਬੰਧਤ ਸ਼ਰਤ ਸਮੇਤ ਸਮਝੌਤਾ ਆਪਣੇ ਅਧਿਕਾਰਤ ਲੈਟਰਹੈੱਡ ਉੱਪਰ ਲਿਖਤੀ ਰੂਪ ਵਿੱਚ ਬੀ.ਸੀ. ਕੌਂਸਲ ਨੂੰ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਗਿਆ।

ਇਸ ਲਿਖਤੀ ਸਮਝੌਤੇ ਨੂੰ 2 ਅਕਤੂਬਰ ਨੂੰ ਗੁਰੂ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਿੱਖ ਗੁਰਦੁਆਰਾ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਸਰੀ-ਡੈਲਟਾ ਵਿਖੇ ਹੋਈ ਸੱਤ ਮੈਂਬਰੀ ਕਮੇਟੀ ਦੀ ਮੀਟਿੰਗ ਵਿੱਚ ਵਿਚਾਰਿਆ ਗਿਆ। ਕਮੇਟੀ ਵੱਲੋਂ ਸਮਝੌਤੇ ਅਤੇ ਇਸ ਨਾਲ ਜੁੜੀਆਂ ਸ਼ਰਤਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਪ੍ਰਵਾਨਗੀ ਦੇ ਦਿੱਤੀ ਗਈ।

ਸਿੰਘ ਸਭਾ ਗੁਰਦੁਆਰਾ ਪ੍ਰਬੰਧਕਾਂ ਵੱਲੋਂ ਮੰਨੀਆਂ ਤਿੰਨ ਮੁੱਖ ਮੰਗਾਂ

1. ਪਸ਼ਚਾਤਾਪ ਅਤੇ ਮੁਆਫ਼ੀ ਸਬੰਧੀ
ਗੁਰਦੁਆਰਾ ਸ੍ਰੀ ਗੁਰੂ ਸਿੰਘ ਸਭਾ ਦੇ ਪ੍ਰਬੰਧਕਾਂ ਵੱਲੋਂ ਹੋਈ ਕੁਤਾਹੀ ਦੇ ਪਸ਼ਚਾਤਾਪ ਹਿਤ ਸੋਮਵਾਰ, 5 ਅਕਤੂਬਰ ਨੂੰ ਸਵੇਰੇ ਸ੍ਰੀ ਅਖੰਡ ਪਾਠ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਆਰੰਭ ਕਰਵਾਏ ਜਾਣਗੇ। ਬੁੱਧਵਾਰ ਸਵੇਰੇ 9 ਵਜੇ ਭੋਗ ਪੈਣ ਉਪਰੰਤ ਇਸ ਮਾਮਲੇ ਸਬੰਧੀ ਮੁਆਫ਼ੀ ਮੰਗਣ ਦੀ ਸਹਿਮਤੀ ਨੂੰ ਪ੍ਰਵਾਨ ਕੀਤਾ ਗਿਆ।

2. ਪਾਵਨ ਸਰੂਪਾਂ ਦੀ ਸੂਚੀ ਸਬੰਧੀ
225 ਸਰੂਪਾਂ ਵਿੱਚੋਂ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ ਵੱਖ-ਵੱਖ ਘਰਾਂ ਜਾਂ ਅਸਥਾਨਾਂ ਵਿਖੇ ਦਿੱਤੇ ਗਏ ਪਾਵਨ ਸਰੂਪਾਂ ਦੀ ਸੂਚੀ ਬੀਸੀ ਕੌਂਸਲ ਨੂੰ ਦਿੱਤੀ ਜਾਵੇਗੀ, ਤਾਂ ਜੋ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੀ ਮੌਜੂਦਾ ਸੇਵਾ-ਸੰਭਾਲ ਅਤੇ ਮਰਿਆਦਾ ਸਬੰਧੀ ਤਸਦੀਕ ਕੀਤੀ ਜਾ ਸਕੇ।

3. ਸੇਵਾ-ਸੰਭਾਲ ਅਤੇ ਤਸਦੀਕ ਸਬੰਧੀ
ਗੁਰਦੁਆਰਾ ਸ੍ਰੀ ਗੁਰੂ ਸਿੰਘ ਸਭਾ ਵਿਖੇ ਮੌਜੂਦ ਪਾਵਨ ਸਰੂਪਾਂ ਦੀ ਸੇਵਾ-ਸੰਭਾਲ ਅਤੇ ਅੱਗੇ ਹੋਣ ਵਾਲੀ ਤਸਦੀਕ ਬੀਸੀ ਕੌਂਸਲ ਦੇ ਨੁਮਾਇੰਦਿਆਂ ਦੀ ਦੇਖ-ਰੇਖ ਹੇਠ ਹੋਵੇਗੀ। ਕੌਂਸਲ ਦੇ ਨੁਮਾਇੰਦੇ ਗੁਰਦੁਆਰਾ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਦੇ ਇੱਕ ਨੁਮਾਇੰਦੇ ਨੂੰ ਨਾਲ ਲੈ ਕੇ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ ਦਿੱਤੇ ਗਏ ਪਾਵਨ ਸਰੂਪਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਸਬੰਧਤ ਪਤਿਆਂ ਉੱਤੇ ਜਾ ਕੇ ਸੇਵਾ-ਸੰਭਾਲ ਅਤੇ ਮਰਿਆਦਾ ਬਾਰੇ ਜਾਣਕਾਰੀ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਕੀਤੀ ਜਾ ਸਕਦੀ ਹੈ । ਇਸ ਦਾ ਉਦੇਸ਼ ਪਾਵਨ ਸਰੂਪਾਂ ਦਾ ਪੂਰਨ ਸਤਿਕਾਰ ਯਕੀਨੀ ਬਣਾਉਣਾ ਹੈ।

ਬੀ.ਸੀ. ਕੌਂਸਲ ਵੱਲੋਂ ਸਤਿਕਾਰ ਦੀ ਬਹਾਲੀ ਅਤੇ ਸੇਵਾ-ਸੰਭਾਲ ਦੇ ਕੰਮ ਵਿੱਚ ਸਹਾਇਤਾ ਲਈ ਛੇ ਸਿੰਘ ਵੀ ਮੁਹੱਈਆ ਕਰਵਾਏ ਜਾਣਗੇ।

ਅਗਲਾ ਪੜਾਅ ਪਾਵਨ ਸਰੂਪਾਂ ਦੀ ਤਸਦੀਕ ’ਤੇ ਕੇਂਦਰਿਤ

ਮੋਰਚੇ ਦਾ ਸਮਾਪਤ ਹੋਣਾ 225 ਪਾਵਨ ਸਰੂਪਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਸਬੰਧਤ ਮਾਮਲੇ ਦਾ ਅੰਤ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ। ਸਮਝੌਤੇ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਇਹ ਪਤਾ ਲਗਾਉਣ ਲਈ ਇੱਕ ਪ੍ਰਕਿਰਿਆ ਤੈਅ ਕੀਤੀ ਗਈ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਪਾਵਨ ਸਰੂਪ ਇਸ ਸਮੇਂ ਕਿੱਥੇ ਮੌਜੂਦ ਹਨ ਅਤੇ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੀ ਸੇਵਾ-ਸੰਭਾਲ ਅਤੇ ਮਰਿਆਦਾ ਦੀ ਪਾਲਣਾ ਕਿਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਕੀਤੀ ਜਾ ਰਹੀ ਹੈ।

ਸਮਝੌਤੇ ਦਾ ਇੱਕ ਮੁੱਖ ਹਿੱਸਾ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਪਾਵਨ ਸਰੂਪਾਂ ਦੀ ਸੂਚੀ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਕਰਨਾ ਹੈ ਜੋ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ ਨਿੱਜੀ ਘਰਾਂ ਜਾਂ ਹੋਰ ਅਸਥਾਨਾਂ ਵਿਖੇ ਦਿੱਤੇ ਗਏ ਸਨ। ਇਸ ਤੋਂ ਬਾਅਦ ਬੀ.ਸੀ. ਕੌਂਸਲ ਦੇ ਨੁਮਾਇੰਦਿਆਂ ਵੱਲੋਂ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਥਾਵਾਂ ’ਤੇ ਜਾ ਕੇ ਤਸਦੀਕ ਕੀਤੀ ਜਾਵੇਗੀ।

ਇਹ ਪ੍ਰਕਿਰਿਆ ਸਤੰਬਰ ਵਿੱਚ ਹੋਏ ਰੋਸ ਪ੍ਰਦਰਸ਼ਨਾਂ ਦੌਰਾਨ ਉਠਾਈ ਗਈ ਇੱਕ ਮੁੱਖ ਚਿੰਤਾ—225 ਪਾਵਨ ਸਰੂਪਾਂ ਦੀ ਸਥਿਤੀ ਅਤੇ ਸੇਵਾ-ਸੰਭਾਲ ਬਾਰੇ ਜਨਤਕ ਤੌਰ ’ਤੇ ਜਾਣਕਾਰੀ ਦੀ ਘਾਟ—ਨੂੰ ਵੀ ਦੂਰ ਕਰਨ ਦਾ ਯਤਨ ਹੈ।

ਜੁਲਾਈ ਵਿੱਚ ਉਠਾਈਆਂ ਗਈਆਂ ਮੰਗਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਵੀ ਪਾਵਨ ਸਰੂਪ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲਿਆਂ ਦਾ ਪੂਰਾ ਰਿਕਾਰਡ ਅਤੇ ਪਾਵਨ ਸਰੂਪਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਲਿਜਾਣ, ਵੰਡਣ ਅਤੇ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੀ ਸੇਵਾ-ਸੰਭਾਲ ਲਈ ਪਾਰਦਰਸ਼ੀ ਪ੍ਰਬੰਧਾਂ ਦੀ ਮੰਗ ਕੀਤੀ ਗਈ ਸੀ।

ਮਾਮਲਾ ਸ੍ਰੀ ਅਕਾਲ ਤਖ਼ਤ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਨੂੰ ਭੇਜਿਆ ਜਾਵੇਗਾ

ਮੋਰਚਾ ਪ੍ਰਬੰਧਕਾਂ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ, ਗੱਲਬਾਤ ਦਾ ਪੂਰਾ ਰਿਕਾਰਡ, ਲਿਖਤੀ ਸਮਝੌਤਾ ਅਤੇ ਸੱਤ ਮੈਂਬਰੀ ਕਮੇਟੀ ਦੀ ਕਾਰਵਾਈ ਸ੍ਰੀ ਅਕਾਲ ਤਖ਼ਤ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਨੂੰ ਭੇਜੀ ਜਾਵੇਗੀ।

ਮੋਰਚਾ ਪ੍ਰਬੰਧਕਾਂ ਵੱਲੋਂ ਮੋਰਚੇ ਦੌਰਾਨ ਸੰਗਤ ਵੱਲੋਂ ਦਿੱਤੇ ਸਹਿਯੋਗ ਅਤੇ ਸ਼ਮੂਲੀਅਤ ਲਈ ਧੰਨਵਾਦ ਕੀਤਾ ਗਿਆ। ਇਸ ਮੌਕੇ ਬਾਪੂ ਰਣਜੀਤ ਸਿੰਘ ਜੀ, ਭਾਈ ਸਰੂਪ ਸਿੰਘ ਜੀ ਅਤੇ ਮੋਰਚੇ ਦੇ ਪਹਿਲੇ ਦਿਨ ਤੋਂ ਸੇਵਾ ਨਿਭਾਉਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਹੋਰ ਸਿੰਘਾਂ ਦਾ ਵੀ ਸਨਮਾਨ ਕੀਤਾ ਗਿਆ।

ਮੋਰਚਾ ਸਮਾਪਤ ਹੋਣ ਤੋਂ ਬਾਅਦ ਹੁਣ ਧਿਆਨ ਲਿਖਤੀ ਸਮਝੌਤੇ ਨੂੰ ਲਾਗੂ ਕਰਨ ਵੱਲ ਹੋਵੇਗਾ। ਇਸ ਵਿੱਚ ਸ੍ਰੀ ਅਖੰਡ ਪਾਠ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਦੀ ਆਰੰਭਤਾ, ਜਨਤਕ ਮੁਆਫ਼ੀ, 225 ਪਾਵਨ ਸਰੂਪਾਂ ਸਬੰਧੀ ਜਾਣਕਾਰੀ ਮੁਹੱਈਆ ਕਰਵਾਉਣਾ ਅਤੇ ਵੱਖ-ਵੱਖ ਥਾਵਾਂ ’ਤੇ ਮੌਜੂਦ ਪਾਵਨ ਸਰੂਪਾਂ ਦੀ ਸੇਵਾ-ਸੰਭਾਲ ਅਤੇ ਮਰਿਆਦਾ ਦੀ ਤਸਦੀਕ ਸ਼ਾਮਲ ਹੈ।

ਵਰਲਡ ਸਿੱਖ ਆਰਗੇਨਾਈਜ਼ੇਸ਼ਨ ਆਫ਼ ਕੈਨੇਡਾ (WSO) ਦੇ ਬਿਆਨ ’ਤੇ ਵੀ ਉੱਠੇ ਸਵਾਲ

ਸਰੀ ਮੋਰਚਾ ਖਤਮ ਹੋਣ ਦੇ ਨਾਲ ਇਸ ਮਾਮਲੇ ’ਤੇ ਸਿੱਖ ਸੰਸਥਾਵਾਂ ਵੱਲੋਂ ਨਿਭਾਈ ਗਈ ਭੂਮਿਕਾ ਨੂੰ ਲੈ ਕੇ ਵੀ ਸਵਾਲ ਉੱਠ ਰਹੇ ਹਨ। ਵਰਲਡ ਸਿੱਖ ਆਰਗੇਨਾਈਜ਼ੇਸ਼ਨ ਆਫ਼ ਕੈਨੇਡਾ (WSO) ਵੱਲੋਂ ਹਾਲ ਹੀ ਵਿੱਚ “WSO Calls for Constructive Dialogue on Satkaar and Maryada” ਸਿਰਲੇਖ ਹੇਠ ਬਿਆਨ ਜਾਰੀ ਕੀਤਾ ਗਿਆ। ਇਸ ਵਿੱਚ ਮਸਲੇ ਨੂੰ ਮਿਲ ਬੈਠ ਕੇ ਹੱਲ ਕਰਨ ਦੀ ਗੱਲ ਕੀਤੀ ਗਈ ਅਤੇ ਭਾਈਚਾਰੇ ਵਿੱਚ ਗਲਤ ਜਾਣਕਾਰੀ ਅਤੇ ਵੰਡ ਬਾਰੇ ਚਿੰਤਾ ਜ਼ਾਹਰ ਕੀਤੀ ਗਈ।

ਪਰ WSO ਦੇ ਇਸ ਬਿਆਨ ਨੂੰ ਸੋਸ਼ਲ ਮੀਡੀਆ ’ਤੇ ਕਾਫ਼ੀ ਆਲੋਚਨਾ ਦਾ ਸਾਹਮਣਾ ਕਰਨਾ ਪਿਆ। ਆਲੋਚਕਾਂ ਦਾ ਕਹਿਣਾ ਸੀ ਕਿ ਬਿਆਨ ਵਿੱਚ ਗੁਰਦੁਆਰਾ ਸ੍ਰੀ ਗੁਰੂ ਸਿੰਘ ਸਭਾ ਨਾਲ ਸਬੰਧਤ ਪਾਵਨ ਸਰੂਪਾਂ ਦੀ ਬੇਅਦਬੀ ਦੇ ਦੋਸ਼ਾਂ ਦੀ ਸਿੱਧੇ ਤੌਰ ’ਤੇ ਨਿੰਦਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਕੀਤੀ ਗਈ। ਖਾਸ ਤੌਰ ’ਤੇ ਪਾਵਨ ਸਰੂਪਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਕਮਰਸ਼ੀਅਲ ਕਾਰਗੋ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਕੈਨੇਡਾ ਲਿਆਉਣ ਅਤੇ ਬਾਅਦ ਵਿੱਚ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਵੈਨ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਲਿਜਾਣ ਦੇ ਮਾਮਲੇ ਨੂੰ ਲੈ ਕੇ ਸਵਾਲ ਉਠਾਏ ਗਏ।

ਕੁਝ ਆਲੋਚਕਾਂ ਨੇ ਇਹ ਵੀ ਸਵਾਲ ਕੀਤਾ ਕਿ ਜਦੋਂ ਮੁੱਖ ਮਸਲਾ ਸ੍ਰੀ ਗੁਰੂ ਗ੍ਰੰਥ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਜੀ ਦੇ ਪਾਵਨ ਸਰੂਪਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਲਿਜਾਣ ਅਤੇ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਸਤਿਕਾਰ ਨਾਲ ਸਬੰਧਤ ਸੀ ਤਾਂ WSO ਵੱਲੋਂ ਗਲਤ ਜਾਣਕਾਰੀ ਅਤੇ ਭਾਈਚਾਰੇ ਵਿੱਚ ਵੰਡ ਦੇ ਮੁੱਦੇ ਨੂੰ ਕਿਉਂ ਉਭਾਰਿਆ ਗਿਆ।

ਇਸ ਪੂਰੇ ਮਾਮਲੇ ਦੌਰਾਨ ਸ੍ਰੀ ਅਕਾਲ ਤਖ਼ਤ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਅਤੇ SGPC ਵੱਲੋਂ ਠੋਸ ਕਾਰਵਾਈ ਨਾ ਕੀਤੇ ਜਾਣ ਨੂੰ ਲੈ ਕੇ ਵੀ ਸੰਗਤ ਵਿੱਚ ਨਿਰਾਸ਼ਾ ਸਾਹਮਣੇ ਆਈ ਹੈ। ਦਖ਼ਲ ਦੀ ਮੰਗ ਨੂੰ ਲੈ ਕੇ ਕਈ ਵਾਰ ਅਪੀਲਾਂ ਕੀਤੀਆਂ ਗਈਆਂ। ਇਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ 22 ਸਤੰਬਰ ਨੂੰ ਬ੍ਰਿਟਿਸ਼ ਕੋਲੰਬੀਆ ਗੁਰਦੁਆਰਾ ਕੌਂਸਲ, ਓਨਟਾਰੀਓ ਗੁਰਦੁਆਰਾ ਕਮੇਟੀ ਅਤੇ ਕਿਊਬੈਕ ਸਿੱਖ ਕੌਂਸਲ ਵੱਲੋਂ ਸ੍ਰੀ ਅਕਾਲ ਤਖ਼ਤ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਨੂੰ ਕੀਤੀ ਗਈ ਰਸਮੀ ਅਪੀਲ ਵੀ ਸ਼ਾਮਲ ਸੀ। ਇਸ ਦੇ ਬਾਵਜੂਦ ਵਿਵਾਦ ਦੌਰਾਨ ਸ੍ਰੀ ਅਕਾਲ ਤਖ਼ਤ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਵੱਲੋਂ ਕੋਈ ਠੋਸ ਜਨਤਕ ਕਾਰਵਾਈ ਸਾਹਮਣੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਆਈ।

SGPC ਦੀ ਚੁੱਪ ਨੂੰ ਲੈ ਕੇ ਵੀ ਸਵਾਲ ਉੱਠੇ ਹਨ। ਖਾਸ ਤੌਰ ’ਤੇ ਇਸ ਲਈ ਕਿ 225 ਪਾਵਨ ਸਰੂਪਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਕੈਨੇਡਾ ਭੇਜਣ ਦੀ ਕਾਰਵਾਈ ਵਿੱਚ SGPC ਦੀ ਕਥਿਤ ਭੂਮਿਕਾ ਬਾਰੇ ਵੀ ਸਵਾਲ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ ਹੀ ਉੱਠ ਚੁੱਕੇ ਸਨ।

ਸਰੀ ਦੀ ਸਥਾਨਕ ਸੰਗਤ ਨੇ ਗੁਰਦੁਆਰਾ ਸ੍ਰੀ ਗੁਰੂ ਸਿੰਘ ਸਭਾ ਦੇ ਬਾਹਰ ਮੋਰਚਾ ਲਗਾ ਕੇ ਇਸ ਮਾਮਲੇ ’ਤੇ ਲਗਾਤਾਰ ਦਬਾਅ ਬਣਾਈ ਰੱਖਿਆ। ਹੁਣ ਲਿਖਤੀ ਸਮਝੌਤਾ ਹੋਣ ਤੋਂ ਬਾਅਦ ਦੇਖਣਾ ਇਹ ਹੋਵੇਗਾ ਕਿ ਗੁਰਦੁਆਰਾ ਪ੍ਰਬੰਧਕਾਂ ਵੱਲੋਂ ਕੀਤੇ ਗਏ ਵਾਅਦੇ ਕਿੰਨੀ ਹੱਦ ਤੱਕ ਪੂਰੇ ਕੀਤੇ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ ਅਤੇ 225 ਪਾਵਨ ਸਰੂਪਾਂ ਦੀ ਜਾਂਚ ਅਤੇ ਸੇਵਾ-ਸੰਭਾਲ ਬਾਰੇ ਸੰਗਤ ਨੂੰ ਕਿੰਨੀ ਪਾਰਦਰਸ਼ੀ ਜਾਣਕਾਰੀ ਦਿੱਤੀ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ।

Sikh Organizations Urge Sri Akal Takht Sahib Management to Act Over Continued Mishandling of Saroops that were Shipped via Cargo Ship

Surrey, British Columbia (KP) – Three provincial Sikh Gurdwara councils have jointly appealed to Sri Akal Takht Sahib for immediate intervention over the continued mishandling, transportation, and care of 225 saroops of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji brought to Canada earlier this year. The appeal follows an incident in which the management of Gurdwara Sri Guru Singh Sabha was caught on video transferring saroops of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji without observing the required respect and maryada for their transportation.

The British Columbia Gurdwara Council, Ontario Gurdwara Committee, and Quebec Sikh Council submitted a joint letter to Jathedar Kuldeep Singh Gargaj of Sri Akal Takht Sahib, calling for a transparent investigation and the release of complete information regarding the whereabouts and handling of the saroops.

The appeal follows a series of developments that have generated significant concern among members of the Sikh community in Canada.

September 20 Incident Raises Questions

The organizations’ latest appeal was prompted in part by a video that emerged on September 20 showing an attempt by Singh Sabha Gurdwara sevadars to transport saroops of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji in the rear of a work van without any proper bedding, palki or chandoa. The saroops were being placed on a low mattress while shoes, food and drink items, rubbish, and other materials were also present in the vehicle.

The organizations state that they were informed that the saroops were being transported to other locations in Canada and the United States, including Toronto even though the issue of beadbi is still pending at Sri Akal Takht Sahib for all these saroops.

The circumstances shown in the video posted on various social media sites raise serious questions about whether proper maryada and standards for the transportation and care of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji are being followed by Singh Sabha Gurdwara and those who are taking these to their personal premises.

Surrey Sangat Holds Gathering

On September 21, a large gathering of the sangat was held outside Singh Sabha Surrey Gurdwara in response to the concerns. The Sikh organizations said they fully support the concerns and demands raised by the local sangat during the gathering.

Among the demands is a full and impartial investigation into the circumstances surrounding the 225 saroops, including:

• Where each saroop was being sent;
• How many saroops are currently housed at Gurdwara Sahibs;
• Where the remaining saroops are located or are intended to be sent; and
• Who has responsibility for the hundreds of saroops in their possession.

Concerns Over 225 Saroops Brought on Cargo Ship

On behalf of Singh Sabha Gurdwara, Surrey 225 saroops of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji were brought to Canada via a commercial cargo container ship. No sevadars from either Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) or Singh Sabha Gurdwara were present during the lengthy ocean transit from India to Canada. The circumstances surrounding the shipment prompted criticism from Sikh communities in Canada, USA, Punjab and elsewhere.

The organizations stated that they had previously issued public statements concerning the matter and had also written to Sri Akal Takht Sahib requesting action. They have yet to see a clear decision or action publicly announced by Sri Akal Takht Sahib regarding the matter.

AKJ Link Revealed for Larrivar Saroops

Our sources have reported that, out of the 225 saroops, over 100 of them are printed in larrivar (ਲੜੀਵਾਰ) format and were shipped via the cargo ship based on a special request by members of Akhand Kirtani Jatha (AKJ). In the past, the late Ripudaman Malik colluded with the AKJ to transport saroops via container ships and even print saroops in defiance of HukamNamas from Sri Akal Takht. Only the SGPC and Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee have the authority to print and publish saroops of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji.

It’s not surprising to see the modern AKJ working with Gurdwara Singh Sabha Surrey, which, like the modern AKJ, is known for its missionary leanings and anti-Sri Dasam Granth ideology and for flouting Panthic maryada and the sangat’s sentiments. This may also explain their silence regarding the various instances of beadbi that have occurred in Canada concerning the printing and transportation of saroops. Their continued silence on these matters is, in itself, a form of complicity.

Call for Remaining Saroops to Be Transferred

The Sikh organizations have also called for any remaining saroops to be transferred to Gurdwara Sahibs designated by the sangat, where they say proper care and observance of maryada can be ensured.

A further demand calls for the management committee, Granthi Singhs, and responsible sevadars to publicly apologize before the sangat.

The organizations state that an apology previously issued by the management and sevadars of Gurdwara Sri Guru Singh Sabha was insincere and did not adequately address the full circumstances of the matter.

Appeal to Sri Akal Takht Sahib

The three organizations are asking Sri Akal Takht Sahib to intervene directly and establish clear measures to ensure the proper care and respectful handling of all saroops of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji.

ਦੀ ਮਰਯਾਦਾ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ ਸੰਭਾਲ ਕੀਤੀ ਗਈ। ਮਹੀਨਿਆਂ ਤੱਕ ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਵਿੱਚ ਕੰਟੇਨਰ ਵਿੱਚ ਬਿਨਾ ਸਤਿਕਾਰ ਦੇ ਰੱਖੇ ਜਾਣ ਕਾਰਨ
ਸੰਗਤਾਂ ਦੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਦੁਖੀ ਹੋਏ ਅਤੇ ਸਾਰੀ ਦੁਨੀਆ ਵਿੱਚ ਸਿੱਖ ਕੌਮ ਨੇ ਇਸ ਘੋਰ ਲਾਪਰਵਾਹੀ ਦੀ ਨਿੰਦਾ ਕੀਤੀ।

ਕਿਊਬੈਕ ਸਿੱਖ ਕੌਂਸਲ—ਵੱਲੋਂ ਵੀ ਇਸ ਸਬੰਧੀ ਜਨਤਕ ਬਿਆਨ ਜਾਰੀ ਕੀਤੇ ਗਏ ਸਨ ਅਤੇ ਸ੍ਰੀ ਅਕਾਲ ਤਖ਼ਤ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਨੂੰ ਲਿਖਤੀ
ਰੂਪ ਵਿੱਚ ਕਾਰਵਾਈ ਦੀ ਬੇਨਤੀ ਕੀਤੀ ਗਈ ਸੀ। ਪਰ ਦੁੱਖ ਦੀ ਗੱਲ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਅਜੇ ਤੱਕ ਇਸ ਮਾਮਲੇ ਵਿੱਚ ਕੋਈ ਸਪਸ਼ਟ ਫ਼ੈਸਲਾ ਜਾਂ
ਕਾਰਵਾਈ ਸਾਹਮਣੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਆਈ।

ਹੁਣ ੨੦ ਸਤੰਬਰ ੨੦੨੬ ਨੂੰ ਇੱਕ ਹੋਰ ਵੀਡੀਓ ਸਾਹਮਣੇ ਆਈ ਜਿਸ ਨੇ ਸੰਗਤ ਦੇ ਦੁੱਖ ਅਤੇ ਰੋਸ ਨੂੰ ਹੋਰ ਵਧਾ ਦਿੱਤਾ। ਵੀਡੀਓ
ਵਿੱਚ ਸ੍ਰੀ ਗੁਰੂ ਗ੍ਰੰਥ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਜੀ ਦੇ ਪਾਵਨ ਸਰੂਪਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਇੱਕ ਕੰਮ ਵਾਲੀ ਵੈਨ ਦੇ ਪਿਛਲੇ ਹਿੱਸੇ ਵਿੱਚ ਨੀਵਾਂ ਗੱਦਾ ਵਿਛਾ ਕੇ, ਜਿੱਥੇ

ਗੁਰਦੁਆਰਾ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਵਿੱਚ ਹਨ ਅਤੇ ਬਾਕੀ ਕਿੱਥੇ ਭੇਜੇ ਜਾਣੇ ਹਨ।
੨. ਬਾਕੀ ਸਾਰੇ ਪਾਵਨ ਸਰੂਪ ਸੰਗਤ ਵੱਲੋਂ ਨਿਰਧਾਰਤ ਸੰਗਤੀ ਗੁਰਦੁਆਰਾ ਸਾਹਿਬਾਨ ਨੂੰ ਸੌਂਪੇ ਜਾਣ, ਜਿੱਥੇ ਪੂਰੀ ਮਰਯਾਦਾ ਅਤੇ
ਸਤਿਕਾਰ ਨਾਲ ਸੰਭਾਲ ਹੋ ਸਕੇ।
੩. ਸਮੂਹ ਪ੍ਰਬੰਧਕ ਕਮੇਟੀ, ਗ੍ਰੰਥੀ ਸਿੰਘ ਅਤੇ ਜ਼ਿੰਮੇਵਾਰ ਸੇਵਾਦਾਰ ਸੰਗਤ ਸਾਹਮਣੇ ਖੁੱਲ੍ਹੇ ਤੌਰ ‘ਤੇ ਮੁਆਫ਼ੀ ਮੰਗਣ
ਗੁਰਦੁਆਰਾ ਸ੍ਰੀ ਗੁਰੂ ਸਿੰਘ ਸਭਾ ਦੇ ਪ੍ਰਬੰਧਕਾਂ ਅਤੇ ਸੇਵਾਦਾਰਾਂ ਵੱਲੋਂ ਪੇਸ਼ ਕੀਤਾ ਗਿਆ ਮੁਆਫ਼ੀਨਾਮਾ ਅਧੂਰਾ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਇਹ ਸਮੁੱਚੀ
ਸਥਿਤੀ ਦੀ ਅਸਲੀਅਤ ਨੂੰ ਬਿਆਨ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰਦਾ। ਇਸ ਲਈ ਉਪਰੋਕਤ ਤਿੰਨੋਂ ਨੁਕਤੇ ਅਜੇ ਵੀ ਪੂਰੇ ਕੀਤੇ ਜਾਣੇ ਬਾਕੀ ਹਨ।
ਅਸੀਂ ਸ੍ਰੀ ਅਕਾਲ ਤਖ਼ਤ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਨੂੰ ਅਪੀਲ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਾਂ ਕਿ ਉਹ ਤੁਰੰਤ ਦਖ਼ਲ ਦੇਣ ਅਤੇ ਇਹ ਯਕੀਨੀ ਬਣਾਉਣ ਕਿ ਸ੍ਰੀ ਗੁਰੂ ਗ੍ਰੰਥ
ਸਾਹਿਬ ਜੀ ਦੇ ਸਰੂਪਾਂ ਦੀ ਉਚਿਤ ਸੇਵਾ-ਸੰਭਾਲ ਕੀਤੀ ਜਾਵੇ, ਤਾਂ ਜੋ ਸਥਾਨਕ ਪੱਧਰ ‘ਤੇ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਦੀਆਂ ਭਾਵਨਾਵਾਂ ਬਹੁਤ ਜ਼ਿਆਦਾ
ਭੜਕਣ ਤੋਂ ਬਚੀਆਂ ਰਹਿਣ—ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਇਸ ਗੰਭੀਰ ਮਾਮਲੇ ਵਿੱਚ ਸ੍ਰੀ ਅਕਾਲ ਤਖ਼ਤ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਦੀ ਸ਼ਮੂਲੀਅਤ ਨਾਲ ਹੀ ਅਜਿਹਾ
ਸੰਭਵ ਹੋ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ।

AMRITSAR, Punjab (KP) – A gathering of Sikh organizations at Sri Akal Takht Sahib to seek Panthic action over the controversial shipment of 225 saroops of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji to Canada took an unexpected turn after a senior Punjab Police officer intervened (video below) during the proceedings, prompting accusations of government interference in Panthic matters. The incident comes amid growing calls from Sikh organizations for greater transparency and Panth-wide protocols governing the international transportation of Guru Granth Sahib Ji.

Representatives of Sikh organizations had assembled to submit a memorandum to the Akal Takht Secretariat and perform an ardas regarding what they describe as the disrespectful transportation of Guru Granth Sahib Ji aboard a commercial container ship.

During the gathering, a senior Punjab Police officer, Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (ADCP) Harpal Singh engaged with organizers and challenged the basis for the proposed ardas. According to video recordings of the exchange, the officer argued that an ardas should not be offered on the premise of beadbi, stating that such a conclusion had not been established.

The intervention immediately drew objections from Sikh activists, who questioned why a police officer was involved in determining whether Sikhs could perform an ardas before Sri Akal Takht Sahib concerning an issue of Panthic concern. Organizers argued that decisions relating to religious observances, including whether an ardas should be offered, rest with the Sikh Panth and the Akal Takht Sahib rather than the civil administration.

Panthic Organizations: Transportation Alternatives Were Available

Addressing the gathering, Sikh activist Bhai Tejbir Singh of Damdami Taksal argued that the controversy extends far beyond whether existing administrative procedures were followed. He maintained that the central issue is whether the highest standards of satkar (reverence) for Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji were observed.

Bhai Tejbir Singh questioned why the SGPC chose to transport the saroops by commercial sea freight when, according to him, more respectful alternatives were available.

He stated that if private individuals could establish specialized transportation facilities for religious purposes, the SGPC—with its resources and institutional authority—could likewise have developed arrangements befitting the Guru Granth Sahib. He further claimed that a Canadian company had offered the use of a private aircraft dedicated to transporting Guru Granth Sahib Ji without carrying alcohol or other commercial cargo, describing it as a seva opportunity. According to Bhai Tejbir Singh, the existence of such alternatives undermines the argument that containerized sea transport was the only practical option.

For the organizations present, the issue is therefore not simply whether damage occurred during the voyage, but whether every possible measure was taken to uphold the highest standards of respect for Guru Granth Sahib Ji.

Calls for Independent Panthic Review

The Sikh organizations are urging the Akal Takht Sahib to independently examine the shipment and establish clear Panth-wide protocols for the international transportation of Guru Granth Sahib Ji.

Among the demands being advanced are:

• an independent inspection of the transported saroops;
• a review of the procedures used during the shipment;
• greater transparency regarding future overseas transportation; and
• the establishment of globally applicable Panthic standards for transporting, handling, and receiving Guru Granth Sahib Ji.

Supporters argue that as Sikh communities continue to grow around the world, uniform standards approved by the Akal Takht Sahib are essential to prevent similar controversies in the future. Sikh organizations in Canada have recently submitted recommendations to the Akal Takht Secretariat seeking measures to avoid a recurrence of the dispute.

Focus Shifts to Police Interference & Independence of Sikh Institutions

Speakers at the gathering also stated that the presence of Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (ADCP) Harpal Singh attempting to influence proceedings at Sri Akal Takht Sahib raises broader questions about the independence of Sikh institutions and the proper relationship between the civil administration and the Panth’s highest temporal authority.

For the organizations assembled, the controversy has now evolved beyond one shipment to Canada. They contend it has become a wider Panthic discussion about preserving the Reverence and Respect for Guru Granth Sahib Ji, strengthening accountability within Sikh institutions, and ensuring that deliberations before the Akal Takht Sahib remain free from government and third-party influences.

OTTAWA, CANADA — Five United Nations Special Rapporteurs have formally raised concerns with the Government of Canada over credible threats against Canadian Sikh activist Moninder Singh Bual, warning that the allegations may form part of a broader pattern of transnational repression targeting Sikh activists abroad.

The intervention (link), welcomed by the World Sikh Organization of Canada (WSO), comes amid continuing investigations into allegations that agents linked to the Government of India have been involved in intimidation, surveillance and violent criminal activity targeting members of the Sikh community in Canada and other countries.

In a joint communication dated June 3, 2026, the UN human rights experts expressed concern that the threats against Moninder Singh appear to be part of “a broader pattern of transnational repression by Indian authorities against Sikh activists in different countries, including Canada.” They further warned that if the allegations are substantiated, attempts to target him before or after his engagement with United Nations human rights mechanisms could amount to unlawful intimidation and reprisals against an individual cooperating with the UN.

Four “Duty to Warn” Notifications

According to the communication, Moninder Singh has received four “duty to warn” notifications from Canadian authorities since 2022 regarding credible threats to his life.

The most recent warning was reportedly issued shortly before his scheduled appearance before the United Nations Human Rights Council in Geneva in February 2026 and extended beyond Moninder Singh himself to include concerns for the safety of his wife and children.

While acknowledging Canada’s efforts in identifying the threats, the Special Rapporteurs expressed concern that no publicly known additional protective measures have been implemented since the latest warning. They called on Canada to:

• Strengthen protection for Moninder Singh and his family;
• Accelerate criminal investigations;
• Hold those responsible accountable; and
• Ensure Sikh activists and other human rights defenders are able to carry out their legitimate activities without threats, intimidation, violence or reprisals.

WSO Calls for Concrete Action

The World Sikh Organization described the intervention by five independent UN experts as an important international acknowledgment of concerns long raised by Sikh organizations regarding transnational repression.

WSO President Danish Singh said the communication recognizes that threats against Sikh activists in Canada cannot be viewed in isolation but are part of a wider pattern requiring urgent government action.

He noted that since October 2024, the Government of Canada has publicly stated that it possesses “clear and compelling evidence” linking agents of the Government of India to violent criminal activity on Canadian soil. Despite this, Danish Singh argued that there has been little meaningful accountability for what he characterized as India’s campaign of foreign interference and transnational repression, even as Ottawa has recently sought to improve diplomatic and trade relations with New Delhi.

According to the WSO, Moninder Singh is among at least a dozen Sikh activists who have received “duty to warn” notifications from Canadian law enforcement in recent years. The organization says those identified as being at risk continue to face serious security concerns despite repeated warnings.

Growing International Scrutiny

The intervention adds to increasing international attention on allegations of transnational repression directed at Sikh activists living outside India.

Over the past several years, Canada has publicly alleged that agents connected to the Government of India have engaged in foreign interference, intimidation campaigns and violent criminal activities targeting members of the Sikh community. Those allegations intensified following the 2023 killing of Sikh activist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in British Columbia and subsequent investigations by Canadian authorities.

In October 2024, the RCMP announced that its investigations had uncovered evidence linking agents of the Government of India to activities including homicide, extortion, intimidation and coercion within Canada, prompting the federal government to take unprecedented diplomatic measures against Indian officials. India has consistently denied those allegations.

The UN communication represents one of the clearest statements to date from independent UN human rights experts linking the threats against a Canadian Sikh activist to alleged transnational repression and emphasizing Canada’s responsibility to ensure effective protection for individuals cooperating with international human rights mechanisms.

Canada Urged to Respond

The WSO is calling on the Government of Canada to provide a comprehensive response to the UN communication, implement enhanced security measures for those identified as being at risk, continue criminal investigations without delay, and ensure that efforts to strengthen relations with India do not come at the expense of accountability, the rule of law, or the safety of Canadians.

The communication by the five Special Rapporteurs is expected to place renewed international focus on Canada’s ongoing investigations into foreign interference and the protection of Sikh activists who continue to report credible threats against themselves and their families.

ਪ੍ਰੈਸ ਕਾਨਫਰੰਸ ਦੌਰਾਨ ਸੰਗਤ ਵੱਲੋਂ ਸਪੱਸ਼ਟ ਕੀਤਾ ਗਿਆ ਕਿ ਇਹ ਮਸਲਾ ਕਿਸੇ ਵਿਅਕਤੀ ਜਾਂ ਸੰਸਥਾ ਦੇ ਵਿਰੁੱਧ ਨਹੀਂ, ਸਗੋਂ ਧੰਨ ਧੰਨ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਸ੍ਰੀ ਗੁਰੂ ਗ੍ਰੰਥ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਜੀ ਦੇ ਸਤਿਕਾਰ, ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਮਰਿਆਦਾ ਅਤੇ ਪੰਥਕ ਸਿਧਾਂਤਾਂ ਦੀ ਰੱਖਿਆ ਨਾਲ ਸਬੰਧਿਤ ਹੈ।

ਪ੍ਰੈਸ ਕਾਨਫਰੰਸ ਦੌਰਾਨ ਹੇਠ ਲਿਖੇ ਮੁੱਖ ਨੁਕਤੇ ਰੱਖੇ ਗਏ:

1. ਸ੍ਰੀ ਗੁਰੂ ਗ੍ਰੰਥ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਜੀ ਦੇ ਪਾਵਨ ਸਰੂਪਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਸਮੁੰਦਰੀ ਜਹਾਜ਼ਾਂ, ਕਾਰਗੋ ਕੰਟੇਨਰਾਂ, ਪਾਲਕੀ ਬੱਸਾਂ ਜਾਂ ਹੋਰ ਵਪਾਰਕ ਮਾਲ ਢੋਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਸਾਧਨਾਂ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਭੇਜਣ ਦੀ ਪ੍ਰਥਾ ਤੁਰੰਤ ਬੰਦ ਕੀਤੀ ਜਾਵੇ।

2. ਸ੍ਰੀ ਅਕਾਲ ਤਖ਼ਤ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਵੱਲੋਂ ਸਪੱਸ਼ਟ ਹੁਕਮਨਾਮਾ ਜਾਰੀ ਕਰਕੇ ਇਹ ਯਕੀਨੀ ਬਣਾਇਆ ਜਾਵੇ ਕਿ ਵਿਦੇਸ਼ਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਸ੍ਰੀ ਗੁਰੂ ਗ੍ਰੰਥ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਜੀ ਦੇ ਪਾਵਨ ਸਰੂਪ ਕੇਵਲ ਹਵਾਈ ਮਾਰਗ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਅਤੇ ਪੂਰੀ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਮਰਿਆਦਾ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ ਹੀ ਭੇਜੇ ਜਾਣ।

3. ਸਾਲ 2014 ਤੋਂ ਲੋਅਰ ਮੇਨਲੈਂਡ ਦੀ ਸੰਗਤ ਵੱਲੋਂ ਪਾਵਨ ਸਰੂਪਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਸਮੁੰਦਰੀ ਰਸਤੇ ਭੇਜਣ ਦਾ ਲਗਾਤਾਰ ਵਿਰੋਧ ਕੀਤਾ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ। ਇਸ ਸੰਗਤੀ ਭਾਵਨਾ ਅਤੇ ਫ਼ੈਸਲੇ ਦਾ ਸਤਿਕਾਰ ਕੀਤਾ ਜਾਣਾ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ ਹੈ।

4 ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਸੰਸਥਾਵਾਂ ਜਾਂ ਪਰਿਵਾਰਾਂ ਵੱਲੋਂ ਪਾਵਨ ਸਰੂਪਾਂ ਦੀ ਮੰਗ ਕੀਤੀ ਗਈ ਹੈ, ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ, ਪਤੇ ਅਤੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਦੇ ਸਰੂਪ ਦੀ ਮਰਿਆਦਾ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ ਸੇਵਾ-ਸੰਭਾਲ ਕਰਨ ਦੀ ਯੋਗਤਾ ਸਬੰਧੀ ਪੂਰਾ ਰਿਕਾਰਡ ਰੱਖਿਆ ਜਾਵੇ।

5. ਇਹ ਦਲੀਲ ਕਿ ਪਾਵਨ ਸਰੂਪਾਂ ਦੀ “ਮੰਗ ਬਹੁਤ ਹੈ”, ਤੱਥਾਂ ਅਤੇ ਪ੍ਰਮਾਣਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਸਾਬਤ ਕੀਤੀ ਜਾਵੇ। ਲੋਅਰ ਮੇਨਲੈਂਡ ਦੇ ਕਈ ਗੁਰਦੁਆਰਾ ਸਾਹਿਬਾਨ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ ਅਜਿਹੇ ਮਾਮਲੇ ਵੀ ਸਾਹਮਣੇ ਆ ਰਹੇ ਹਨ, ਜਿੱਥੇ ਮਰਿਆਦਾ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ ਸੇਵਾ-ਸੰਭਾਲ ਸੰਭਵ ਨਾ ਹੋਣ ਕਾਰਨ ਸਰੂਪ ਵਾਪਸ ਕੀਤੇ ਜਾ ਰਹੇ ਹਨ।

6 ਸ੍ਰੀ ਗੁਰੂ ਗ੍ਰੰਥ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਜੀ ਦੇ ਪਾਵਨ ਸਰੂਪਾਂ ਦੀ ਛਪਾਈ, ਆਵਾਜਾਈ, ਸੇਵਾ-ਸੰਭਾਲ ਅਤੇ ਅੱਗੇ ਸੌਂਪਣ ਦੀ ਪ੍ਰਕਿਰਿਆ ਲਈ ਵਿਸਥਾਰਪੂਰਵਕ ਵਿਸ਼ਵ ਪੱਧਰੀ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਮਰਿਆਦਾ ਅਤੇ ਦਿਸ਼ਾ-ਨਿਰਦੇਸ਼ ਜਾਰੀ ਕੀਤੇ ਜਾਣ।

7. ਇਸ ਮਾਮਲੇ ਨਾਲ ਸਬੰਧਿਤ ਸਾਰੀਆਂ ਘਟਨਾਵਾਂ ਅਤੇ ਫ਼ੈਸਲਿਆਂ ਦੀ ਨਿਰਪੱਖ ਅਤੇ ਪਾਰਦਰਸ਼ੀ ਜਾਂਚ ਕਰਕੇ ਜ਼ਿੰਮੇਵਾਰ ਵਿਅਕਤੀਆਂ ਅਤੇ ਸੰਸਥਾਵਾਂ ਦੀ ਜਵਾਬਦੇਹੀ ਨਿਰਧਾਰਤ ਕੀਤੀ ਜਾਵੇ।

8 ਲੋਅਰ ਮੇਨਲੈਂਡ ਦੀ ਸੰਗਤ ਵਿਦੇਸ਼ਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਸ੍ਰੀ ਗੁਰੂ ਗ੍ਰੰਥ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਜੀ ਦੇ ਪਾਵਨ ਸਰੂਪਾਂ ਦੀ ਛਪਾਈ ਲਈ ਪ੍ਰਿੰਟਿੰਗ ਪ੍ਰੈੱਸ ਸਥਾਪਿਤ ਕਰਨ ਦਾ ਵਿਰੋਧ ਕਰਦੀ ਹੈ।

ਪ੍ਰੈਸ ਕਾਨਫਰੰਸ ਵਿੱਚ ਇਹ ਵੀ ਕਿਹਾ ਗਿਆ ਕਿ ਸੰਗਤ ਇਸ ਮਾਮਲੇ ਨੂੰ ਪੂਰੀ ਸ਼ਾਂਤੀ, ਸੰਜਮ ਅਤੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਦੇ ਸਤਿਕਾਰ ਨੂੰ ਮੁੱਖ ਰੱਖਦਿਆਂ ਅੱਗੇ ਵਧਾ ਰਹੀ ਹੈ। ਸੰਗਤ ਦਾ ਉਦੇਸ਼ ਕਿਸੇ ਨਾਲ ਟਕਰਾਅ ਪੈਦਾ ਕਰਨਾ ਨਹੀਂ, ਸਗੋਂ ਭਵਿੱਖ ਵਿੱਚ ਅਜਿਹੀਆਂ ਘਟਨਾਵਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਰੋਕਣਾ ਅਤੇ ਸ੍ਰੀ ਗੁਰੂ ਗ੍ਰੰਥ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਜੀ ਦੇ ਪਾਵਨ ਸਰੂਪਾਂ ਦੀ ਉੱਚੀ-ਸੁੱਚੀ ਮਰਿਆਦਾ ਨੂੰ ਯਕੀਨੀ ਬਣਾਉਣਾ ਹੈ।

ਸੰਗਤ ਨੇ ਇਹ ਵੀ ਸਪੱਸ਼ਟ ਕੀਤਾ ਕਿ ਸ਼੍ਰੋਮਣੀ ਗੁਰਦੁਆਰਾ ਪ੍ਰਬੰਧਕ ਕਮੇਟੀ ਦੇ ਸਕੱਤਰ ਅਤੇ ਸ਼੍ਰੋਮਣੀ ਕਮੇਟੀ ਵੱਲੋਂ ਭੇਜੇ ਗਏ ਨੁਮਾਇੰਦੇ ਵਾਰ-ਵਾਰ ਇਹ ਬਿਆਨ ਦੇ ਰਹੇ ਹਨ ਕਿ ਸ੍ਰੀ ਗੁਰੂ ਗ੍ਰੰਥ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਜੀ ਦੇ ਪਾਵਨ ਸਰੂਪਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਕਿਸੇ ਵੀ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੀ ਬੇਅਦਬੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੋਈ ਅਤੇ ਸਾਰੇ ਸਰੂਪ ਪੂਰੀ ਮਰਿਆਦਾ ਨਾਲ ਸੁਰੱਖਿਅਤ ਪਹੁੰਚੇ ਹਨ।

ਸੰਗਤ ਦਾ ਕਹਿਣਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਸਤਿਕਾਰ ਅਤੇ ਮਰਿਆਦਾ ਦਾ ਜੋ ਮਿਆਰ ਇਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਬਿਆਨਾਂ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਪੇਸ਼ ਕੀਤਾ ਜਾ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਲੋਅਰ ਮੇਨਲੈਂਡ ਦੀ ਸੰਗਤ ਨੂੰ ਪ੍ਰਵਾਨ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ।

Canadian Gurdwaras Alarmed as Hundreds of Saroops Transported Via Commercial Container Ship by SGPC

SURREY, BC (KP) – Sikh organizations and members of the Lower Mainland Sangat held a press conference at Guru Nanak Sikh Gurdwara Sahib (Surrey–Delta) on Tuesday, calling for an immediate end to the practice of transporting Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji Saroops overseas in commercial sea cargo containers.

The press conference, held at the Shaheed Bhai Hardeep Singh Nijjar Memorial Building, was organized in response to the recent shipment of 225 Saroops of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji from Punjab to Canada via commercial container ship. Speakers emphasized that the issue is not directed against any individual or organization, but is solely concerned with preserving the highest standards of Satkar (reverence), Gurmat Maryada, and Panthic principles in the transportation and handling of the Guru Granth Sahib’s Saroops.

Sri Akal Takht Management Asked to Issue Directive

Addressing reporters, representatives of the Sangat reiterated their long-standing opposition to transporting Saroops by commercial cargo vessels, palletized freight, or other methods used for ordinary commercial goods. They called upon Sri Akal Takht Sahib to issue a clear Panthic directive requiring that Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji Saroops destined for countries outside India be transported only by air and in accordance with established Gurmat Maryada.

The Sangat noted that the Sikh community in British Columbia has consistently opposed sea shipment of Saroops since 2014, arguing that the concerns raised by the community over the past decade have not been adequately addressed. They urged Panthic institutions to respect this long-standing position.

Call for Appropriate Record Management of Whereabout of Saroops

Among the resolutions presented at the press conference were calls for comprehensive records to be maintained for every requested Saroop, including the identity and address of the recipient institution or family and confirmation that they are capable of maintaining the required Maryada. Organizers also asked that claims of high demand for Saroops be supported with verifiable evidence, noting that several Gurdwaras in the Lower Mainland have reported instances where Saroops have later been returned because proper care and maryada could not be maintained.

The Sangat further called for the development of comprehensive worldwide Panthic guidelines governing the printing, transportation, custody, and transfer of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji Saroops. They also demanded an independent and transparent investigation into all decisions surrounding the recent shipment of 225 Saroops, with accountability established where appropriate.

Opposes Overseas Printing Presses

Another resolution expressed opposition to establishing printing presses outside India for the printing of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji Saroops, stating that the Lower Mainland Sangat does not support such initiatives.

E-Mail Campaign Site Launched

To encourage wider Panthic participation, organizers announced the launch of StandForSatkar.org, a website that enables Sikhs around the world to send emails directly to Sri Akal Takht Sahib and the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC). The campaign urges Panthic institutions to discontinue the overseas shipment of Saroops through commercial sea cargo and to adopt transportation methods that fully uphold Sikh Maryada.

Responding to recent statements by SGPC officials that the Saroops were transported safely and without any disrespect.  The speakers maintained that the issue extends beyond just the physical condition of the Saroops. They stated that the standard of reverence being applied to the transportation process itself does not meet the expectations of the Lower Mainland Sangat.

Organizers repeatedly stressed that their objective is not to create conflict with the SGPC or any other institution, nor to divide the Sikh community. Instead, they said their goal is to elevate the standard of respect afforded to Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji and to ensure that similar controversies do not arise in the future.

The press conference concluded with an appeal to Sri Akal Takht Sahib, the SGPC, and Panthic organizations worldwide to address the matter promptly and establish uniform global standards governing the transportation and care of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji Saroops in accordance with Gurmat Maryada.

The removal of Satluj from streaming platforms in India has transformed the long-awaited biographical film on Shaheed Jaswant Singh Khalra into more than a cinematic release—it has become the latest chapter in an ongoing debate over how one of Punjab’s most painful periods should be remembered.

Based on the life of renowned human rights activist Jaswant Singh Khalra, the film chronicles his investigation into thousands of unidentified bodies that were secretly cremated during Punjab’s years of militancy and counter-insurgency. Khalra’s painstaking documentation of these cremations brought international attention to allegations of enforced disappearances, extrajudicial killings, and other human rights abuses committed during the late 1980s and early 1990s. He was abducted in 1995 and later murdered, a crime for which several Punjab Police officials were ultimately convicted.

Originally announced under the title Punjab ’95, the film spent years in limbo after India’s film certification authorities reportedly sought extensive cuts. Although it briefly appeared on the streaming platform ZEE5 under the new title Satluj, it was removed within days after government intervention citing security concerns, further fueling controversy over artistic freedom and public access to historical narratives.

Rather than silencing discussion, the film’s removal has prompted community screenings throughout Punjab and abroad, where Sikh organizations, human rights advocates, and members of the public have gathered to watch and discuss Khalra’s legacy. These grassroots screenings have become opportunities for older generations to share their experiences while introducing younger Sikhs to a period of history that many believe has received insufficient public attention.

For many Sikhs, the significance of Satluj extends well beyond the story of one individual. The renewed interest in Khalra’s work has revived longstanding calls for greater acknowledgment of the violence, disappearances, and alleged human rights violations that marked Punjab during the insurgency era. Advocates argue that confronting difficult historical episodes—including the experiences of victims and their families—is an essential step toward accountability, reconciliation, and lasting justice.

The controversy has also drawn criticism from religious leaders, civil liberties advocates, and members of Khalra’s own family, who contend that restricting public access to the film only reinforces the perception that uncomfortable chapters of Punjab’s history remain politically sensitive. The Akal Takht has called for the film to be allowed to reach audiences, describing open discussion of Khalra’s work as important to preserving historical truth.

Whether viewed as a film, a historical account, or a catalyst for public dialogue, Satluj has succeeded in bringing renewed attention to Jaswant Singh Khalra’s legacy. Three decades after his assassination, the questions he raised about truth, justice, and accountability continue to resonate far beyond the courtroom, reminding many that unresolved chapters of history cannot easily be erased from public memory.

LOS ANGELES, USA — U.S. federal prosecutors have announced sweeping charges against alleged members of India-based organized crime networks, including claims that jailed gang leader Lawrence Bishnoi and associate Satinderjeet Singh, also known as Goldy Brar, ordered the 2023 assassination of Sikh leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar in Surrey, British Columbia.

The charges were announced as part of Operation Hard Ball, an international crackdown that led to 24 arrests across the United States, Canada and Europe. Prosecutors say the wider investigation targeted alleged crimes including murder, extortion, kidnapping, drug trafficking, weapons offences and human smuggling.

Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a prominent Sikh activist and president of Guru Nanak Sikh Gurdwara in Surrey, was shot and killed on June 18, 2023, outside the gurdwara. His killing sparked international concern and severely strained relations between Canada and India after Canadian officials alleged possible Indian government involvement, which India denied.

The new U.S. indictment alleges Bishnoi directed criminal activity from prison in India and that the Bishnoi network was involved in Nijjar’s killing. However, reports note the U.S. indictment does not accuse the Indian government of involvement.

Canadian authorities had previously charged four Indian nationals in connection with Nijjar’s killing. The latest arrests and indictments suggest investigators are now focusing on a broader transnational network allegedly operating across North America and beyond.

Sikh community advocates welcomed the law-enforcement action but said the full truth behind Nijjar’s assassination must still be pursued. Sikh activist Moninder Singh called the crackdown positive for public safety, while warning that questions remain about the wider network behind the violence.

WSO Action Against Bishnoi Gang

The World Sikh Organization of Canada (WSO) welcomed the coordinated law enforcement operation by authorities in the United States, Canada and Europe targeting the Lawrence Bishnoi terrorist network and other India-based transnational organized crime groups.

While welcoming today’s enforcement action, WSO stated that it was concerned that significant questions remain unanswered regarding the role of agents of the Government of India.

Canada’s National Security Adviser Nathalie Drouin testified before parliamentarians that India collected intelligence on Sikh Canadians through diplomatic channels and proxies, which was then provided to Indian authorities who passed the intelligence to the Bishnoi gang. Senior Canadian officials have also confirmed that India’s Home Minister Amit Shah directed campaigns of violence and intelligence gathering targeting Sikh activists in Canada.

WSO President Danish Singh said:

“We welcome today’s crackdown against the terrorist Bishnoi organization. The allegations contained in the U.S. indictment reinforce the serious threat posed by transnational organized crime to public safety and to members of the Sikh community.

Today’s arrests are an important step but they do not answer the questions that matter most to Sikh Canadians. The Government of Canada has already publicly identified links between agents of the Government of India and the Bishnoi gang. Sikhs expect full transparency regarding the role India played in these activities.

How was Lawrence Bishnoi able to operate an international criminal enterprise while in Indian custody? What role did Indian government officials play in enabling or facilitating these activities? What role did Home Minister Amit Shah play, as described by senior Canadian officials? Canadians deserve answers to these questions. Accountability cannot end with those who carried out these crimes. It must extend to anyone who enabled, directed or facilitated them.”

SURREY, BC  (KP) – The British Columbia Gurdwara Council, Ontario Gurdwara Committee, and Quebec Sikh Council issued a joint statement expressing serious concerns regarding the shipment of 225 saroops of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji by a commercial container ship to Canada.

The sacred saroops were placed in a dilapidated bus by the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC), which was subsequently loaded onto a commercial container ship for transport from India to Canada—a voyage that typically takes 30 to 60 days. After completing the transoceanic journey, the aging and weathered bus was unloaded and towed to Sri Guru Singh Sabha Gurdwara in Surrey.

As the bus carrying the 225 sacred Saroops arrived at the Gurdwara, members of the Sangat noticed moisture and condensation accumulating on and around the vehicle once it was unhooked from the tow truck.

Sikh organizations emphasized that Sikh Maryada requires Guru Sahib’s saroops to be transported with the highest respect, care, and dignity, and transporting them on a container ship for nearly two months has caused widespread concern among the Sikh Sangat regarding the lack of respect, sanctity, and proper respect of the sacred saroops during the unaccompanied long voyage – void of any sevadars.

Potential Risks to Saroops in Sea Voyage

Transporting the saroops in this manner exposes them to a number of potential risks, including the possibility of cargo containers being lost overboard during severe weather or rough seas. There is also the concern that prolonged exposure to fluctuating temperatures, humidity, condensation, and other environmental conditions inside a non-airtight vehicle could potentially affect the paper, ink, and binding of the saroops.

In addition, because the shipment would not remain under the continuous supervision of SGPC officials or Sikh sevadars throughout the voyage, there would be no practical means of ensuring that Sikh Maryada is observed at all times, including preventing unauthorized access, smoking, the wearing of shoes inside the vehicle, or any other form of physical disrespect or intentional mistreatment.

Akal Takht Management Silent on Previous Concerns 

The Canadian Sikh organizations also noted that previous concerns relating to similar incidents in 2014 and 2019 remain unresolved, despite the matter having been brought before Sri Akal Takht Sahib on multiple occasions. This has contributed to a lack of confidence in the timely resolution of such matters.

A directive issued by Sri Akal Takht Sahib on April 24, 2014, prohibits the transportation of the sacred saroops of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji via commercial container shipping until Panthic organizations, the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC), and Sri Akal Takht Sahib reach a consensus on appropriate guidelines and procedures.

The organizations urged Sri Akal Takht Sahib to consult representatives of Canadian Gurdwaras before issuing any decision and called for an independent and transparent inspection of all 225 saroops. Among the resolutions adopted are requests that the saroops be transferred to the supervision of the BC Gurdwara Council or another appropriate Panthic Gurdwara, that responsibility be determined if any damage is found, and that prompt action be taken to prevent further tensions within the Sikh community while upholding the highest standards of Sikh Maryada.
