Amritsar Sahib, Punjab (KP) - Bhai Ram Singh, Jathedar of Akhand Kirtani Jatha (India) peacefully passed away in his sleep on March 2nd. The executive 11-member committee of the Akhand Kirtani Jatha, Panthic Jathedar Bhai Sahib Ranjit Singh Ji, and others who attended his antam-sanskar praised the Jathedar’s selfless sewa for the Sikh Nation.
In consultation with all AKJ regional representatives, the 11-member committee with Jathedar Bhai Sahib Ranjit Singh Ji presented a ‘Siropa’ of honor to Bhai Surat Singh, affectionately known as “Puran Ji” in Panthic circles, to serve as the mukh sevadar of the Jatha after Bhai Ram Singh’s death. This announcement was made by the committee at Guru Arjan Dev Ji Niwas, Amritsar Sahib.
Bhai Ram Singh was selected as the Jathedar of AKJ in 1978, and led the Jatha through the difficult times of 1978 Vaiskahi Massacre (when 13 Singhs of the Akhand Kirtani Jatha and Jatha Bhindran were killed by the pseudo-Nirankari cult), Operation Blue Star of 1984, and the years of genocide afterwards.
He helped oversee aid to countless Shaheed families, often challenging the police authorities and politicians in order to assist and protect the spouses and children of the Shaheeds from harassment and detention.
The 90 year old Jathedar, who retired with the rank of Retired Squadron Leader, had bravely fought the Japanese while serving in the Royal Air Force. He was the author of the widely circulated booklets titled “Dawn of Divine Wisdom”, and “Larridar Saroop.” He also wrote many articles on Gurmat for Sura Monthly. He had the great fortune of scribing the entire Saroop of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji in the later years of his life. For the benefit of our readers, contents of the booklet “Dawn of Divine Wisdom” is being made available in a series of installment on Panthic Weekly, starting with this issue.
Akhand Kirtani Jatha in India, UK, Canada, USA, and in other parts of the world are holding various programs in memory of Jathedar Ram Singh, and have expressed their full support and confidence in the leadership of Bhai Surat Singh Ji. Bhog of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji’s path and Kirtan will be held at Bhai Ram Singh Ji’s residence in Rani-ka-Bagh, Amitsar on March 11th of 2006, along with the Hola Mohala Samagam at Anandpur Sahib on March 12th.

Jathedar Sahib Bhai Ram Singh Ji was my grandmother's brother. I have very fond memories of him during his service in the Air Force. As a youngster in 50s/60s visited the family during summer holidays.
May God bless his saul.
