Surrey, BC -Local Sikh youth have once again submitted a youth slate for the upcoming November 15th 2009 election for the Guru Nanak Sikh Gurdwara Society in Surrey B.C.
It was less than a year ago that the youth slate were announced victorious in the November 2008 Guru Nanak Sikh Temple elections and as we all know due to technical reasons, the last election results were nullified. With the interests of the community at heart, the youth at the time decided it was better to go back to the Sangat and have them decide again, rather than waste the Societies time and money in court cases.
The youth team this year is led by Bikramjit Singh Sandhar a long term community Sevadaar, who was chosen by the team for his leadership, experience and vision. Each of the youth slate candidates have contributed to providing a shared vision and platform, and each has gone through a rigorous selection process.
In the next 4 weeks, the Sikh Youth slate will campaign with the mission of uniting the Sikh community, and providing concrete support to both the youth and elders in the community. In particular, the Sikh Youth slate plans to institute programs that will help youth excel in their education and career goals, while working to eliminate youth involvement with gangs and drugs. In addition, the Sikh Youth slate will be initiating new programs to engage with elders, providing often marginalized seniors with a support-structure that will help them voice their concerns, receive assistance, and actively participate in community events.
As in the previous election, the youth slate will be appealing to the members of the Gurdwara Sahib, and asking each one of them, if they also share the same vision and objectives of the youth slate. Members will be asked to decide for themselves if the same leadership that has ran the Gurdwara Sahib for the last decade and beyond, can now all of a sudden, turn around and provide the support and services required by the community. Or if they should join other Sangat's and give a youth slate a chance to prove themselves and implement this shared community vision.

Hope the Sikh youth finally win this time, it was a great disappointment last year, where the youth slate won and then the victory was put aside due to incorrect slate nomination papers.
